Researching Film Magazine

There are many major British film magazines and they all target different audiences. These include magazines such as ‘Empire’, ‘Total film’ and ‘Little White Lies.’ They all relate to different genres, fans, gender along with national and international audiences and films.

Firstly the magazine ‘Empire’ focuses on a mass audience mainly globally as they offer reviews largely around American block buster films. These include films such as Batman, Terminator, Harry Potter and many more. Empire is also mainly aimed at males rather than females as they have sexy images of women such as Megan Fox as the cover of their magazines and describe her using words such as ‘Hot’ and ‘Smoking’ with hot red writing. In addition the title is very bold and a red capital font along with the word ‘Empire’ means to concur or rule which represents a manly image and strong which is referred to the characteristic of a man. The style of the magazine based around one main theme or film and then all the articles and other pages are based around topics related to the film for example one month the magazine may be based around Sherlock Holmes and therefore the theme of the magazine would include suspense/ thriller/ adventurous aspects.

The magazine is also aimed at young adults as they use words such as ‘Baffed’ on their online forums which tells us as the audience that they use both formal and informal language but more towards the informal as they are almost like more relaxed and ‘cool’. Furthermore the magazine also has a customer fan base of followers from around the world along Australia. The magazine is also very successful as they have many followers through their monthly subscriptions and have a rise of 3.6% followers which is around 194,016 compared to 85, 031 which Total Film received after the release of Batman, Terminator, Harry Potter and Transformer sequels. In addition they also get sponsored by Barclays Bank which also represents that they are quite successful.

On the other hand Total Film covers a range of different films and genres ranging from Hollywood block busters to independent British films, however focuses more on the smaller independent films rather than block busters. The target audience for Total film would include again mainly males, however not as strongly as Empire as there would be a substantial proportion of female readers as well of the magazine, yet this magazine is mainly national based rather than international.

The style of the magazine again has a main focus point again mainly sci-fi/ adventure/ thriller genres such as Star Trek, Inception and again Sherlock Holmes. The magazine is quite similar to Empire, however not as dramatic or based on Hollywood as it focuses more on British films and the UK. Total Film also seems to be a quite successful magazine as they have many social networking communication and followers with their fans such as Facebook, Twitter etc. also have fans that pay a monthly subscription for the magazine. In addition they have a good relationship with other websites and company’s such as ‘IDMB’ and ‘The LAMB’ along with offer a forum service which contain many discussions between fans. Furthermore they also had a 0.6% rise due to editions such as Batman, Terminator and so on.
